Re: I need help from the pros
Well we just hope you're right this time. lol....Yeah I have two, they're both the same age but the other one is bigger. The feathers look about the same, but it doesn't have the waddles, and it's comb is much shorter, doesn't go as far up on it's head.
Yep, we'll just have to wait and see.

I know I am late coming in on this thread, but you can take a piece of plywood and set it on cinder blocks. The youngsters can run under to get away from the older gals and you haven't lost the floor space because they will all walk on top of the plywood.

Re: I need help from the pros
Here's a couple of group shots. I couldn't get them separated today, they all wanted to hang together. One of them looks pretty mangy but she's not, she's molting. lol
The one with the crooked toes is not with us any longer. I don't know if it was a hen or rooster, but it was my constant companion. Any place I was he was someplace near by, and always singing while I worked. I think he hung with me for protection. His feet just kept getting worse. He could walk, and run ok but he couldn't roost or scratch. The others didn't want him around, so I fed him separate.
One day I was on the porch when I heard a lot of commotion out back. I ran around there and two of the older hens had him down and was pecking him in the head. I had to kick them off of him, but it was too late. He couldn't get up. I put him inside so they couldn't get to him, a couple of hours later he died.
I named him, Buddy, and buried him in the pet cemetary.
I'll try to get some better shots tomorrow.

Oh, Noend, I'm soooooo sorry about Buddy. He lead a blessed life while he could.
Re: I need help from the pros
Thank you Deb., we just didn't have him near long enough. But I guess it was a blessing in disquise, sometimes it's best to let nature take it's course. His feet was getting worse, sooner or later he probably wouldn't have been able to walk, and I would have never been able to do what would have to be done. So maybe it's better it happened this way.
I've learned from it. I'll know what to watch for next time, and what to do about it.

Re: I need help from the pros
From the pics, I would say buddy was buddie the hen. Those crooked toes can be a vitamin deficiency, The incubator could have been a degree or two too high,or they could have been broken by others picking at them when they were little. Some with crooked toes will roost just fine if their roosts are made of wider boards or if there is a shelf somewhere up high.
Many Americaunas will have the crooked toes from genetics also.
You have a beautiful flock of girls there Noend.

Thank you for the nice comments Okie.
Thank you WC. that's very nice of you.
That's what the others were telling me too. Maybe he/she wasn't getting enough to eat. I'll have to keep a better eye on them next time. I guess no matter how hard you try though you're going to have some problems. Those crooked toes can be a vitamin deficiency
Thank you WC. that's very nice of you.
