Bad News for the last incubator run

Post by Foghorn on May 13th 2013, 11:08 pm

Yep, this is absolutely the poorest outcome I've ever had hatching hen eggs. I started with 41 eggs; candled after 5 days and only found 14 eggs with embryos. Candled again after 7 days; still only 14. After 21 days 7 of the 14 hatched of which 4 were crippled.

Obviously, most of these eggs were not fertile. But whatever else happened to the rest I haven't a clue. I've probably had 10 or 12 successful hatches before this and as far as I know I did nothing different. pale

It is either the heat or the humidity that affected the chicks that hatched. Let me go find you a link from the forum I had way back when. It has an excellent reference area on it.

This is the reference area. There is plenty of topics in there, but I could not see the specific one I was looking for to help you. Sad

Thanks Deb, I'll have a look. I keep two thermometers and a hygrometer in the bator throughout the 21 days always. Also, the incubator has an egg turner and thermostat, and I closely follow the recommended temp and humidity settings for each of the three weeks of incubation. I've never had this problem before. As a matter of fact, at one time I made an incubator out of an ice chest and a lamp, turned the eggs by hand 3 times a day (used the hygrometer and thermometer) and 90% of the eggs hatched with no crips. I used that homemade bator several times until I got tired of the full time commitment to it. My wife said I was starting to cluck and grow feathers. Wink

LOL...yes, that is how I incubated most of the time also...the mother hen style. I have heard of this problem before. I am no longer sure which forum the discussion took place on, but it was definitely linked to heat and humidity. Even one degree off, for a delicate batch of eggs, can spell disaster. When you said the chicks that did hatch, were crippled, were they unable to stand properly and their legs would go out to the sides? If so, that is called spraddle leg and you can actually cure it with some stabilization. There is a link for spraddle leg on the forum I referenced earlier...or you can just search the term and end up with far more information than you could desire on it. How long have you been using this incubator and the thermometers? You just might want to invest in a new thermometer and hydrometer just in case. After a period of time, and use and then storage, things can get jostled around and damaged ever so slightly. Just a thought.
