Ameraucana Pullets

Post by Foghorn on May 1st 2010, 1:32 am

I can hardly make myself spell Ameraucana and then, to make matters worse, the spell checker red lines it. Very Happy Anyway, I am the recent proud owner of 15 pullets of this breed. Having previously owned Silver Laced Wyandottes, which kept their feet on the ground 100% of the time, I was surprised to find that these do not; They fly about as well as a heavy pigeon might. Not quite 2 mos old, they already sail over a 6ft fence with very little effort. However, when they are on earth, they are fairly friendly and do not mind being picked up and handled. They would just rather fly than walk from one end of the yard to the other and a fence is just a minor inconvenience. If anyone owns any of this breed I would be interested in knowing if this is typical behavior and will they settle down as they get older and heavier? Question

LOL, it does settle down. They are very inquisitive and active when young. They will still fly up high to roost, and the crotch of my tree always seemed to have a pile of green and blue eggs in it, but for the most part they will become a bit more controlled...mature. With the way their eye shape is and the curve of their beak, I always reckoned them to be related to the ever soaring hawk...lol.
