treenzzzzz!!! would like to pick your bean on a few thoughts

hey treenz. i got a few questions to ask ya.

my comp is toast atm so i cant get on msn with ya guys for a wile.

any way. soo we have noticed for a wile now that julia. the youngest girl. 6 yr old seems to be haveing some hearing problems.

i noticed this a few years ago but when she was tested they really could not get a good test as she was freaked out about the head phones used for testing. i was inceraged to try to get her over her fears and to try again. but that from what they could tell she seemed to hear just fine.

ok well so the last test was last year. they again said she seems fine as she can hear us talk to her. but i still notice other things in her behavor over the last year that has still left me kinda wondering.

however it seems more often she seems to be havein a harder time hearing us. and i have noticed she eather moves VERY close to our face when we talk to her. or she will trun her left ear to us to hear us better. as well as she seems to be learning to read lips more then really just lison to us talk.

with all this i have also heard her say more then once . " my ears dont work good" and she has yet to grow out of the "huh?" or "what?" stage.

now she was top of her class last year in learning. but the teacher always said she is not fallowing directions. but is one of her smartest kids. so passed her to 1st grade. and asked that we really work on her maurity and to see that she learns to fallow directions better over the summer.

ok so this year the new teacher cant seem to get her to pay atention. in class. says that she is up in the kids faces. and looks very blankly at her when she tryes to tell her what to do. (duh she is lookin at the teachers lips) i know this im the mommy DUH. but she insist that we have her tested for "ADD" (sigh never can be any other issue with a kid now days always ADD)

well now im 100% sure she is not ADD. lmao . i mean if im told to do something i dont want to do i can go ADD asap. lmao . she is the same way. if its not carebears rainbows or something pretty, she simply hasnt the time to deal with it. lol (thats where she needs to grow up a little and we are workin on responsabilty) lol

now i have sent emails to her teachers an the specal ed teachers that will be doin her testing. (sigh ) they agreeded to do a audio testing on her. mmm this test is to see if its certen sounds in words that she is haveing a hard time understnadin and there for not responeding to them. (henc a issue with fallowing directions) BUT as a mommy. im willing to try that test but would like to go to the max with any and all hearing test i can. so we are not left hangin in the red tape for a year tryin to get her to comply with something she simply can not comply to with out other promps or actions to help her best understand and learn her lessons.

be it hearing aid or maybe draining of ear taders or even if posably maybe lip reading or ASL. its all about what she needs NOT what they can offer her. if that makes sence.

so with all that long stuff to read. ..... have you any ideas of what i shoud be lookin for in the way of test or behavors? maybe sugestions on learning a little more?

i have had deff friends over they years. but i have to admit they all seemed so normal to me that i never really payed any mind to any habits they might do on a daily bases to compinsate for their lack of hearing in the every day world, or life. i guess i just never seen them as any differant then my self so i never really payed attenction.

now im finding that i might have to learn more to better help miss julia. lol.

any ideas would be helpful.

Wow...I sure hope that you can at least do some sort of assisted hearing device for a while just to see if it will make a difference.

well for the most part she is pretty normal. her spech is clear. and her readin and understanding of "nomral" comuataions is fine.... im wondering if maybe its not something that is slowly removeing her hearing as she gets older. if that makes sence? as she seems to have no prob with tones and such in music and LOVES music. but has to lison or play it loudly to really injoy it. mmmm so maybe it might be a autrory thing. but i woudl like the max info and testing to be 100% sure of it.

im used to talking loudly to her. and used to tapin on her sholder or head to get her attention. so it was not in tell my husband findly questioned me about it that i really took major notice of the importance to look more in to this issue.

i mean if my HUSBAND of all people. (guy never notices any thing in the house hole and tells me a boo boo needs a band aid when it clearly needs stiches) notices this .. then yeah its time to take care of any issus she might have.

bumping this up so treenz will hopefuly see it befor she heads to bed.

1) most important thing is to treat Julia as you've always done - excatly the same as you do to her brother and sisters.

2) take all four kids to a class to learn sign language for fun. And perhaps a deaf person would be the one teaching sign language

3) see how julia likes sign language? just carry on talking to her at the same time whether she lipreads or listen... yes carry on touching her to get her attention too ( use light switch too - wave - thump floor - whichever works for her)

4) take julia to an ear specialist after getting a recommendation letter from family doctor - and give julia a treat before and after going to have her hearing tests done properly. (while kids are at school)

5) carry on treating julia normally and using sign quietly (without attracting undue attention) whenever she didn't pick up information correctly.

6) if that same school treated terry very well - i wouldn't worry too much if julia still likes going to that school. if possible find out if she could have a support person to check that she is learning ok maybe an hour or so weekly? and teacher be tactfully told ... (and maybe have julia moved her desk to the front line if she doen't mind.) i found it much easier if i am very close to the teacher myself but that's at the college (year nine).

7) julia will be ok - no worries - so long she gets all the info - communication - love and attention (same as her siblings) and it would be good if she meets some children with same hearing loss as herself if that's confirmed as they will understand one another and be able to tell one another stuff...

it will take time for her to settle down and accept herself as she is. she can carry on with her own activities both at school and at home.

9) she may need a hearing aid only if an ear specialist says so... find out if you can get any financial help with this?

good on ya to seek info from the deaf person like me - hugs serina - it would be good for you to meet other deaf or hearing-impaired people and learn from them.

only if confirmed - look up internet if you can to find out more for julia - in your area. there's a deaf American actress M.... M..... she can speak a little but signs alot... another good thing is= sign language is good for the brain as it exercises both sides of the brains and Deaf friends stay friends for many many years Good Luck!!!

thank you so much treenz. most of that im doing now. but hadnt thought of trying a family asl class together. i have consiterd going back for a reminder corse for my self. and then reteaching it over again here at home. just for fun really. as ASL is a very fun laugage to use and learn. but ill look in to a family class and hope i can fine one. )

on a side note to day i got her progress report. LMAO seems all her "top of the class" has fallin below gread lvl..... sigh this crap just never ends some times..... any way they insist on testing her for A.D.D. ..... sigh looks like ill be haven to hop up and down on dest again yellin screamin and BEGGING them to open their dam eyes to other posabiltys......

i was there yesterday for a parant teacher meeting for terry. totaly unrelated to julias issues and meetings.

but i had called the day befor to get the doctors number off of their emergancy cards so i could call her to set a appointment up for julias hearing and such...

so i walked in and signed the papers to go on campus. when sue at the desk asked me what child i was looking to have the hearing test on. i told her julia. and she paused for a sec and EVEN SHE ADMITTED she had wonderd about julia her self.

this is good and bad. as if the frount office desk lady can pick up that there might be something worng with her hearing. WHY THE HECK CANT other staff ... example ooo say maybe her TEACHER?????? sigh who knows any more?...

Stay vigilant WC...just make sure you do the best by your kids that you can.

meh well get it figored out im sure. this cant posably be as hard to prove and work with when conpaired ot her big brother. lol.

ok WC let them test julia for A.D.D. and if they are wrong - too bad - their mistake - not yours! make sure they pay for it not you!

get a letter from Dr. re hearing test when you can - maybe find out re internet where you can go for Julia's hearing test for free? and keep the graphs and all you got from hearing tests.

good on you re asl sign - have fun with it! but whole family would be fun? i hope you can find a class... have fun searching for sign class via internet at library or inernet cafe?

try find a mixed group of children - re hearing disabilites or none...

we have a "deaf nest" where normal kids of Deaf parents mix with deaf children who has normal parents with no sign skills. there the parents learn from deaf parents using sign

Deaf parents use sign all the time even with their own normal kids... these normal kids will sign to the deaf children who had no sign skills. (i wish i did...)

Deaf with capital are the ones using sign language as their own language.

thank ya treenz your a huge help here. im still tryin to get a hold of our doctor but i cant seem to get any one to awnser the phone. not even a oncall anwsering machean. its odd i never had this porb befor. so i dont know if she moved changed number is no longer with our inserance. or just closed for vacation. lol and the 8 hour on hold phone calls all over the inserance office is a task im really dragin feets on lol.

ok not to much of a change yet with julia im still waiting for her meeting iwth the teachers and team. i have asked a few times when this will take place and i have pointed out i want NO TESTING DONE ON HER IN TELL we have said meeting. but i fear they might have missed that and she might have been tested any way. not htinkin this will do much damage really. but still kinda bugs me in a way.

i findly got past all the red tap with insernaces i have 3 hearing doctors. all ALL 3 are in differant citys from 80 miles a way to 150 miles a way. but htey are the only ones we have to chose from. so bet it.

it is still erly to call them soo ill be makein them calls in the next hour or so. lol i think ill need to call the school again as well and demand a meeting for julia. i need a time a date i have wated over a month for that info.

ok well with terry as done as can be for the next month any way.

on to julia...... mmmmmmm ok still have not found a doctor with in reasonable distance. and after todays little engen light thing i really think i need to be very aware of any small sight posabitly of travle issues.

HOWEVER Mrs.X did look at her. i do think she has been ufrotionitly tested for ADD all thought i did not give that permisstion. im not gonna fight over it with them. i think they know im not takeing that bullcrap any more. and sure nuff julia had a HUGE CROP OF EAR TADERS sigh again...... this kid can get CUNKS of ear wax in her ears. and we do have to try to clean them out often. its posable this is her only real issue and my prayer that it is. eather way. "mrs x" cleaned out as much of the crop she could. i to am cleaning them daily here at home. she saids her ears work better now. WOOT!!! i so hope this is her only prob. mmm but would still like to have her tested any way. and see if there is any way to slowdown or a better way to keep the taders at bay. lol. i still have not heard any thing from the school on this. and its starting to bug me. i would like to know what the f*** is going on on a daily basses with my kids proptly. dont think that its to much to ask to have them toss me a fast e-mail or note in her back pack.

so really we are still at a stale mate with juila

I agree WC...they really should notify you on the same day of doing things, what was done and what result/conclusion reached, if any.

Have you looked into drops for swimmer's ear? Maybe just a daily drop in each ear would help to keep them open???

i had pot luck dinner with deaf girlfriends last night

we had lots of discussions...

in midst of all this i remembered you and Julia

i asked one who has many Deaf in her families eith born deaf or hearing impaired. what was the tubes they put in children's ear for those who dont hear properly - thru "glue-ear" - tubes are called grommits (grommets(sp?)) and in time they fall out when its not needed anymore. Two of her grandchildren has them. Her sister in law had one son with grommits (out of four sons)... so its quite common here.

serina it would pay to find more about this as it stops glue ear and keeps ears open without any problems - ask Dr to see ear nose throat specialist for this. do not meddle with her ears till you know more please. hugs

ook treenz ill look in to that..... she hasnt seemed to have any real pro hearing sence we keep them clean. or as clean as we can. lol..... she can grow a fast crop of ear taders.

so im HOPEING its just them ear taders that is the prob. i havent got her to a doc yet. as i cant get that far a way..... i need to find one here on the home frount for her. and then have to make sure i have the cash on hand too. lmao. but she seems to be doing well. ill find out for sure in dec with her parant teacher comferance..... its just that cuz i dont know for sure if its ear taders or a real porb i still want to have her tested and checked by a real doc. but omg finding one in this area is like a needle in a hay stack. lol

i still have not heard any thing at all on her "add testing" sigh but i intend to look in to that to day and see what the heck is going on. i should have got some note by now i would have thought.
