yup you all read right a HOUSE GUEST can you beleave it.. lol

he or she showed up last night after the thunderstorms. im not real sure what to make of it just yet. as its behavor is to DIE FOR ......

yup you guessed a DOG a DOG IN MY HOUSE wow yeah i said the same. (well almost)

well normaly as mean is it seems im one to always ALWAYS toss the stray dogs back out the gate and lock down the yard. now no i dont toss them back out the frount as i dotn want them run over on 66. but at the same time i sure as hell dont want the animal in my yard eather.

we had been lookin for a dog for a few months its true. but my dad gave the kids 2 new kittens last week. so we stoped all dogie hunting. 3 cats and a gold fish where enough as far as we where consernd.

but something told me not to toss this one back out.
it cam in in the dark as the power was out. and i had a few candles lite here and there but really still dark.

my first thought was THERE IS A DAM SHEEP IN MY HOUSE it is huge and creamy white.

any way it walked right in like it had always been here. freeked out julia and i both. we both jumped. i said holy hell its a sheep? julia was like MOM ITS A SHEEP!!!!! DO THEY BITE?? lmao

on the dubble take i reilzed it was a dog... not any dog but a CHOW . now we all know chows some times can get a little nasty. NOT ALL but some and sadly to my experance more offen then not Sad

so i shewed julia out the frount door (just in case) and i called to the dog.... it was a little slow. but did stop and look at me a bit confused as if to say " i hear you but dont understand what you want." so i figored maybe im not useing words he would understand and i used shorter more comanding words. i told it " come" and it cam to me. then i told it "sit" and it sat. i asked it " where the hell you come from pupdog?" it just looked at me cocked its head (HUGE HEAD) and LICKED ME!! i was like wtf?

well by this time moose came in the door to see said DOG in HIS HOUSE. and FLUFFF! i just knew the fight was on like donky kong. and was lookin for some thing to get between the dog cat and my self . THANK YOU FLY LADY MY HOUSE IS TO DAM PICKED UP TO FIND ANY THING . omg what the hell am i gonna do.
but the dog just looked over at moose and walked a way like to say " meh whatever. " moose kept his disstance. but fallowed.

now by this time the news of a DOG in our house got to the other 2 kids (terry is still at grandpas) and they come flyin in the side door behind the dog whootin and hallerin. OMGOSH MOM MOM ITS A DOG!!! CAN WE KEEP IT ? WHERE IT COME FROM? WILL IT BITE?" jumpin around like 3 monkeys with their tails on fire i was sure this would freak out the dog and maybe get a kid bit. BUT THIS DIDNT SPOOKE IT AT ALL i just looked at them and layed down.

i was like wow 3 brownie points. obedant, kid friendly, AND animal frendly.

long story short as posable.
1) i have never seen this dog ever befor and it is soo dam pretty. i would have noticed
2) all though it is every well behaved. it tells me it MUST belong to someone.
BUT
3) it is sooo dam nagelted groomin wise i cant bleave ti is still alive in this deasert heat. (we have filled no kiddin a 55 gal trash can with fur of this poor animal. i have only got one side of its hinny and leg cleaned up.) i had to get the sizers out im socked the poor thing could crap with all the crap stick to it. SOO MUCH SO that i cant tell it is male or female just yet.

i told the kids we could keep it for 1 week. to try to find its owners. a dog this well behaved has to have or have had a family at one time. and if after 1 week we cant find its family that we would have to call the shelter.

it has no caller. OR HAD NO CALLER it does now i bough one for it and a lesth and food and shampoo (once we get as much of the mats off we can) doggy biskits and a HUGE BEEF LEG BONE. i boiled up and gave to it after it put up with all my tugin and pullin on its fur.

the negibor asked me if i could take that bone a way with out it geting agressave. TRUEFULY i will admit i was a bit skeard to try it. chows and mess you up.. but he said if i can get that bone a way form it with out it geting mean he she or it was a sure keeper. SOO i bravely walk up ot it and bent down. it just looked at me. i ask it can i have that there bone? and it looked at me. so i reached out and touched the bone... and the dog took its paw off it i picked up the bone and he didnt do a dam thing just sat there looked at me and sniffed the ground and looked at me..... i gave him back his bone and scrached his ears. told him he was a good dog. he was happy to have it back.

erlyer to day it would seem moosie and the dog have made friends. (mind you moose dont do dog) but the 2 of them where sunbathing together out in a moist patch of dirt. just a snoozing a way.

not sure we will keep this dog or not. im gonna take it to the vet tomarow and have it scaned to see if it has a chip. (maybe find out its sex) we will place up flyers all over too. ill also call the shelter adn put in a found dog report. if in one week we cant find the owners. i will make the final desistion as to if we will keep it or not. i figor in one week any personalty trates that are not welcomeing to our home will show up. also in one week we can see how responsable the kids are with a dog. and this one is HIGH MANTANCE. chows mixs and desert heat DO NOT MIX well.

any way yeah..... love ya alls Smile see ya soon

Post by WildCherry July 14th 2008, 3:32 pm

ok well to day we took a trip to the vet. to see if she had a chip.. yes we now know she is infact a she. she has been spayed she is VERY OLD guessin about 7-8 years or so. and she has no chip Sad and 20 bucks later that nasty mat has been mostly removed and her claws trimed.

her hips are just arthritus. she said to add fish oil to her food to help some with it that that will never go a way.

she was a bit of a pain to get in to the car this morning. she dont like callors or leashes. mm not sure why we can only guess at her age. but she did get in findly and i priased her for it. she seemed to feel better about it then.

a few things we have learned to day and some trates adn personaltys are slowly showing up. as to be expected as we learn to trust each other. and like a kids the first few days in a new persons houes you tend to be on your best behavor.

ok so the trip tothe vet was impressave. she in no way tryed or shown agresson even with the clipers and nail triming. she DONT LIKE HER FEET MESSED WITH but she didnt grawl or snap or show teeth. just tryed to hide. or get a way. the vet got a number for a no kill shelter. as she said its not likly we will ever find her owner. and at her age with her arthritus and bad teeth she will not have a chance at the shelter. as they will put her down pretty much right a way cuz of age and breed. chows have a nasty rep. they have a rep for being sweet as hunny waging tails then POOF riping your face off even after YEARS of ownership.

these things i did know. and hence why im so leary of her still.

so she got home and hoped right out of the car like it was all cool. she likes it out side most the time dont really want in. but we offerd to let her in as its cooler in here then out there and she desided to enter. all was well she nosed around a bit ect ect ect. i was on the phone with the tv guy when i seen julia FREAKIN OUT AND CRYIN. im guessin one of the kittens atacked the dog. julia grabed the kitten but the dog was pawing at it. she got bit and scrached by the kitten but the dog didn nothing to her for takeing it a way. she was cryin adn you can tell the dog knew it was a bad thing and wanted out. but even after the kitten gota way and ran under one of the sofas. she truned to the sofa lookin for it. bythis time MOOSIE WAS PISSED and givein the dog a can of woopass. but the dog was more interested n the kitten. and julia still in histarics.

eatehr way mmm not sure what that was about as she really hadnt seemed to have cared about the cats befor now. WE WILL BE WATCHING THIS. this is not something that will get her brownie points at all. needless to say i was NOT IMPRESSED by that behavor at all. regardless if the kitten started the fight or not

boots (kitten) is fine jsut a little slobberd on lmao but just as spunky as ever regardless. and like i said i really didnt see what really happend. seems to me in a way if she really wanted to harm the cat she could have done it in one bite. with out half the slober on it. BUT I DONT KNOW.

eather way still giveing her her full week here in hopes to find her home. i have the flyers out. all over no one has called yet. one week 7 days should be enough time to really get to know her better adn her us as well. and desided from there if she is a keeper. or if she is going to the no kill shelter.

ok day 3 with the ol girl. well to day she seems to be up and about more. she is wandering a round the yard. chewin on her bone drinking soo much water. i keep refillin it for her. to day i took the kids to school. now our frount door doesnt close. it never has sence we moved in. we have to use the bolt to lock it down. or it just swings open and shuts its self generaly. normlay bein in the mid of no where i dont lock this door or mess with it in tell bed time it just stays as is.

any way she figored out as we where gone that she could get in this way. lol we came home and i was lookin all over out side and we could not find her any where. Sad i figored well easy come and easy go. oo well the neighbors could use the left over food and treats and such. no wast. no biggie.

but when we came in we found her layin in the kitchen just kickin back waggin her tail with a smile. i was like WOOT SHE IS HERE!!! happy dance...... oo chit where are the kittens?? my heart sank. Sad i looked all over and could not find them any where... hmmmm" ill just not mention this to julia" and we scrached her ears and sent her back out side.

about 30 min latter i heard jinglein in the window sill. LMAO ALL 3 CATS sunbathing like no big deal. THANK GOD!! all is well. lmao

she has nosed in a few times to day and she seems to be lookin for the kittens. she finds them and they FREAK OUT. julia still has fits and saids the dog has to stay out side. i just tell her NO!! and that gives the kittens time to run off. as she stops and looks at me.

im really not sure what is up with this yet. but they are soo small still. i dont think i want to find out. she shows not interest in moose. but then again moose is not much smaller then her LMAO.

so that is her update. no one has called yet Sad

She sounds like a great dog. I bet you will never find her owners. Take it from an expert on rescuing dogs, she more than likely was not treated with the love and affection some of us give our dogs and when she got old they more than likely got another and dropped her off so they didn't have to pay for vet bills or watch her die.
I would give her a chance with the kittens(under sharp supervision) I bet she has mother instincts and being they are little she just wants to mother them. She may try to pick them up and move them to a "nest" of her chosing. I right now have a dropped off kitten that Detta thinks she has to mother. Granted it doesn't like it very much and walks off they are starting to bond and the mothering is getting boring for Detta. If she didn't hurt them while you were gone, she's not going to. In time the order in the house will become established and her accepted and Harmony will be once more.

I like to hear that you aren't judging her because of her breed. So many people scream "CHOW!!" and call the dog pound. Most of the time ANY breed of dog can be dangerous and alot of the time the smaller ones are worse. But I believe it's in the way us humans raise and treat them. She sounds well behaved and trained well, I bet she will never hurt you or yours.

ty for the reply hun it gives me a little hope.

im not one to judge a animal by breed most the time. bu ti do keep in mind my personal experaces with differant breeds.

pits i have had good and wonderful experances with as family dogs. they are a fantasic breen IMHO for a good loveing family with hardy kids. as they are very loyal very strong and active dogs and i feel extreamly intelagent animals. HOWEVER at the same time i have had my share of runins with VERY agressave and mean ones as well.

i personaly have never had a chow growing up. my mothers has always been 100% aganst them. she never trusted them and perferd the dobbys over any other breed. LMAO GO FIGOR lmao .

but i have had friends with them. they seemed very loyal to their people but unfriendly to any one that showed up. they got locked a way most the time. and at one time or anothere where acused of bitedin a kid that was not in the family.

my best girlfriend had a chow for 13 yrs. he was a good dog but even after 10yrs of knowing me still was not friendly and was kinda on gard most the time i was there. yet never tryed to do any harm. just kinda on the side lines like to say " go head step out of place girl" lol i ignored him lol.... however the day did come when he was soo old and all though they had him on meds ans took awsome care of him. he did infact turn on her mother and attacked her. HOWEVER IN THE DOGS DEFENCE he was very very old. it was well past is time to go. but they loved him so much they could not bring them selfs to take him down to put him to rest. i think he was going senial as well realy. this was the time they all desided it was time to let him go and they put him down. it was a very hard time for the family for weeks after as they got used to him not being there.

i have my animal care tec lisons and such and worked in the shelters and pounds. and with resue animals too.

i agree 100% its not to much of the breed as it is the animals liveing condistions. some breeds just atract the wrong kind of owners. this is sad as they tend to get them for stadus and not for companionship.

hence instead of the people geting the bad reps the breeds and dogs do. Sad this is very sad i feel.

my exerance with chows. sadly has been more on the bad side then the good. i have worked iwth and known some wonderfull chows as well.

i think my issue with this one is more of my oun then hers. i have trust issues in gerneral. i dont trust people and or animals i dont know. i give them the respect dew and go on my way. honestly this dog has not shown any reason for me to be leary. but my experances tell me to watch her closely. this i think will work its self out in time as we BOTH learn to trust eachother. i mean it has to be a bit odd for her as well. it would seem she never really had much phycial care. (brushing bathing cliping) things like that. and then POOF come here and that is all its about allmost all day.

today she seemed very attave Smile im happy to see. she was up and about almost running a round. she would look in the windows as if to say " YO YOU THERE YA KNOW YOU WANT TO COME SAY HI" lol and was in and out off and on.

we had thunder again to night and she came bookin it in the house. my husband dont like dogs and is not fond of this one eather. he tryed to tell her to get out but she woudl not move. i could see she was skeard so i told her "come" and we walked out the door. then BOOM!! more thunder and back in she whent. i told my husband she is afraid of the thunder. and " you cant expect her to lison to you if you dont show her attention" meaning how can he expect the dog to trust and do as he said. IF HE DONT FIRST show her that he acetpts the fact that she is alive. lol

well our little miss dogy will be shineing pretty monday morning. Smile

i did have one call to day but the lady was lookin for a golden retreaver Sad sadly not the one we have i feel bad for her. i hope she finds her lost pup.

any way i have come to the conclustion its not lookin good on the finding her peoples hunt. Sad and she seems happy here. i think SO FAR i just might keep her.

any way about monday. i set up a appointment for one of the top moble groomers to come by the house and give our ol girl a make over from the paws up to her puffy ears. lol

she is my DD BFF mom. and she is cuting me a deal of only 50 bucks. not bad consitering the mess this ol girl is in... we are talkin about real names for her too. we have so far on the list
windy woo
stormie
betty
and chowder.

lol she dont seem to care what we call her as long as its not late for lovens lmao.

to day was a good day she came in and out as she pleased. and even layed down with the kids on the foor and put her paws on them demaning loveins. lol she jsut layed there. then she HOGED my kitchen sink floor area as i tryed to cook dinner. but wasnt begin or any thing she really dont seem to interested in people foods. this is a good thing for her as she is to old to have people foods any way. she needs good healthy foods and dental treats. (ok ok ok you got me so we give her roasted and BBQ piggie ears too) BUT they are not bad for her. its a heck of a lot better then rawhide. (youll never see any of my animals with that crap as a treat. seen way to many pass a way cuz of that crap) hehe and she still carrys her BIG OL SOUP BONE all over too. lol so funny watching her musel that thing a round.

so thats todays update. lookin good for her i think

well to day we are being tested with strangers in the yard. mmm we had 2 tv guys show up. she noiced them pretty quickly. she stared barking at them. they asked if my dog would bite. i told them truthfuly i really didnt know. as she was a stray that just showed up that i didnt know how she would respond to some one in the yard. but that she hadnt shown any agresstion sence she had been here.

i tryed to get her in the house but she would have none of it. i tryed to put her leash on and she troted off to the other side of the house. when she came back around she wasnt barking any more but didnt look to happy to have these strange men in im guessing what she is seeing as HER YARD now. Sad she didnt seem agressave but more so as worning them she was there. how ever i think she might have grawled if they had come any closer with out me there to talk to her.

the landlord will be comeing in to day as well and he dont know we have her here yet. he is a natual with dogs. they tend to take to him well. and he ends up keepin most strays him self lmao. i hope this is the same case with her. ..

im not sure if i like this or not. i just dont know her well enough yet to know how she will react. i like the idea she lets her self be known. and i like the fact she only seemd to bark. but if i was not there im not sure how far she would go with some one in the yard all solo and such. i dont want to come home to find some one came bye and got bite. lmao this woudl not be a good thing.

however so long as they stay out by the gate she dont say or do any thing dont even lift her head to even look at them. it was not in tell they came in the gate and walk up to the house did she start barking.

please pretty please try take a pic of chowder before she had her beauty treatment and afterwards... Very Happy

if my dog barks at anything like a car arriving next door or along the back driveway i send Sam inside house immediately saying "Inside!" if he wont i walk him inside and say "Inside" same time as if i really mean it. He is protective of me and our yard too.

It would be a good idea to show your kids how to command your dog to go inside or outside (where-ever you want chowder to go) for their protection and visitors too. then you will be comfortable - ok? Smile

what do you recommend Dee?

Heart warming story Sernia! I finally got a chance to sit down and read it from beginning to end without being too tired to fall asleep on my keyboard. My guest and I have been going non-stop since her arrival and it will be sad to see her leave on Tuesday morning.

I like the name Chowder also. I think, from all that I have read here, that she is 'home'. She knows her place and her family and will be a good defender of all. The kittens are probably just 'puppies' to her, or the fact that she wants to romp and play with them. She just doesn't realize she is about 120 pounds heavier than they are.

I too have a 'distrust' of chows, and I beg you to keep a sharp eye out for anything out of the ordinary towards you or the kids. But, I think she has adopted all of you as hers, so it should be ok.

Bless you for taking her in and giving her a good home for the rest of her life. Things happen for a reason in life...she's a furry angel in disguise. Wink

ok guys sorry i just nwo got to get here to tell a little more abut her.

well sorry guys chowder is a Sadie. lol she is too pretty.

well that grooming secstion didnt happnen in tell TODAY. lol the lady found out she was preggers so celabrated that. and didnt find time to get to use in tell this morning about 7am. i was not expencting her. but terry came in and told me some lady was at the door lookin for me. first thing that enterd my foggy mind was OOO CHIT THE DOG!!!. but i didnt hear her barking at all.

i grabed my pants and took off out side. to find her and teryann. standin in the yard talkin to each other. lol. she didnt mind teryann at all (teryann being the groomer)

so any way im very happy with her. we belave she is chow mixed with golden reterver. she definatly has the retreaver personality. she is in no way mean.

he has the cow fur and cute ears and poke-a-dot toung, and short muzle. but has the blond retreaver colors. with streks of redish and colfee colors. she is just to dam pretty.

any way soo she has been here almost a month now. we have desided we are gonna keep her i dont think we will ever find her owners. we will go down next tuesday to the shelter to get her rabies shot and her licance. i knwo we live in the mid of nowhere but i dotn want to take the chance of not haveing them shiney tags around her little neck just in case.

so she got the clasic chow cut for the most part. buzzed all over except the main and a little puff ball on her curly little tail.
LMAO SHE LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING FROM DOC. SUSSE. i crack up every time i see that little puff ball wagin in the wind like some kind of blond and red flag.
she is soo old you can tell now too. its clear she never had pups. no sagy boobies for this ol girl. BUT EVERY THING ELSE sags. lol she sits and all that skin from head to tail just rolls up on her little butt. she stands and it all un wrinkls and heads to her legs and feet. lol she almost looks pug under all that fur.

but she is feelin soo much better i can tell. she is nto panting 24-7 any more. she is more active. and she just is all around happyer. the pampering has done her good.

all and all i think we have nothing to worry about now. i mean if she was gonna snap or bite or grawl she woudl have done it by now. and she hasnt. she seems to have no prob with men , women, differnt colors of people. other dogs most the time. (neighbors are babysitin a rottie. her name is "buttercup" and is a BI***CH) Sadie dont like her much but buttercup starts the fights. other wise she dont even look at other dogs. she is home now. she is a family member. we love her and i think she is happy with us.

now for some ideas for the ol girl. i want to run past you all. remember i have not had a dog in like 7+ yrs. so im sure there are some new goodies out there now days.

she is old and really dont like callers or leashes. she tryes to pull out of them. and you got to "sneek up"on her to get the leash on. she dont mind the coller much any more. but gets VERY squraly if you try to pull her back or lead her by it.

so im thinkin maybe a harnis. you know a pretty hot pink one with rinstones HAHAHA. i wonder if that will help her some. or make her feel more safer about being lead around. what do you think?

next are her teeth. they are really bad. and right now i just cant a ford to have them cleaned and repaired. they dont seem to give her any pain or any thing. but she only has one canine tooth left. the others are broke or warn down almost to nubs. all the other teeth are warn down too nubs too. and very very plack covered. all brown and red. her gums look ok. pinkish for the most part. and no bad breath.

for this i got her some doggie milk bones. for teeth cleaning and breath. she also has her soup bone to chew on as she feels like, and for her food i have been feedin her sienor kibles and bits. its not as hard as other foods. but not soft eather. kinda crunchy gummy. kinda stuff. she likes it ok. but prefers the catfood now. WE ARE WORKIN ON THAT lol. we try to keep it up when she comes in. lol. she also has pig ears for specal treats and i got her some grilled tenders for treats too. (ok so we give them to her cuz we love her not for any thing super good she has done) but we cant help it. have you guys any ideas of better things to help with her teeth? she dont seem interested in chewing any thing like toys or such.

then her eyes. they are bright and clean and clear for the most part. but i can see some foggy ness comeing in. age i think. like caderacts. no really bad. but you can see she will go blind one day over this. do you guys know of any thing i can be adding to her food or eyes to help slow this down?

other wise i think we pretty much have the doggie care coverd. kids keep the poo up and we brush her daily. she has 2 large bowls of water out side at all times. and we feed her about 1-2 cups of food 2-3 times a day when i see her bowl empty. she gets to play and walk around with the kids. and lay and sleep or rest when she wants to. she dont show signs of being skinny or over wait. (gots a little sadle bag on the hips) but come on what women of her age dont. lol

Hi Serina. Glad to hear that it is final now and Sadie is home for good.

Age treats...find the msm & gluclosamine tablets. They are treat flavored and do wonders for old joints.

The teeth, they now sell doggy tooth brushes that slide onto your finger and beef flavored tooth paste.

The eyes...not much will help that. Carrots, but find a dog that will eat carrots and not just shred them in play. You could look for a high dosage/old age doggy vitamin.

Ok, where is our pictures??????

i thought of the tooth brush thing. the vet recomened it. MM NOT sure she would go for haveing someones finger stuck in her mouth for long lol. its worth a try i guess.

the tablits .... ill look at petsmart. i know walmart dont carry them. i looked. i guess i could have looked in the people place. but didnt think of it at the time. for now i add fish oil in her food when she is not lookin. lol.

and i might not get her to eat carrots. (or play with them for that matter. she is a lover not a player. she dont run jump chace of fech) to old i think for all that puppy stuff. BUT i bet i could slip in some vite A in her treats Smile hehehe that is just as good.

as for pics hun i really dont have a cam for that. i could get her on the web cam in msn one night though Smile heheh but i dont know how to get it to take a pic so i can post it like the old cam we had years ago.

thanks for the ideas. how do you guys feel about the harnis thing though. do you think she might be ok with someting like that instead of the caller? she really really really dislikes the leash and caller thing. and i would like some way to restrain her if needed.

not sure if this'll help any but this is one place we get stuff for our dogs
Doctors Fosters and Smith you can also order a catalog from them that has a lot of info in it I think it would be worth a look
and why not try the harness would'nt hurt her any and you should be able to restrain her easier, sounds like she does'nt like her neck to be pulled on to me.

I think the harness would be a lot more gentle on her spinal column and her hips, etc. Give it a try...what do you have to lose? If you buy it at Petsmart, you can return it if she says no way...lol.

How nice that you kept the dog!! An old dog is pretty cool - it has its own habits - but is wise and calm.
About the carrot.... Not much of the vitamins, especially Vit A in this case, will get lost if you cook it. I often cook carrots for my dogs! Just mash it and add to her food. Most dogs like it - its pretty sweet.
As she has now settled down - she knows her way around the house and garden. She will not go blind in one day. Probably you will not even be able to tell when she cannot see anymore. It will not bother her much. If you move furniture around and you notice she bumps into them - guide her around the new settings and she will soon know how to move around the house again.
The teeth is quite another matter tho.... You really need to save up the money and get her mouth cleaned up. She might even have her teeth extracted, but that is much better than having bad teeth. It's the most common cause for other infections... She will do fine without teeth or with just a few. You will just have to soak her feed so that its easy to eat. (lol, just thought about that re my labs: they NEVER chew their busquits!!!! they are like vacuum cleaners - they just "suck" them up in seconds. I am forced to add water to their dishes - otherwise they would sufficate pale )
Be careful with smoked treats - pig ears are very often heavily smoked - it's tough on an old dogs system. I try to give my dogs only baked, not smoked, treats.
That's all I can think of now... Hope it helps a bit.
